   Presidents Message for March 2014

Author Gregory Crouch gave an excellent presentation at our February meeting about his book, China's Wings: War, Intrigue, Romance and Adventure in the Middle Kingdom During the Golden Age of Flight, in which he details the development of China National Airways Corp. The meeting write-up in these pages will give you an idea of some of the exciting, and sometimes harrowing, stories he shared.

New Membership Chair

A huge thank you to Byron May for taking over as Membership Chair in addition to his duties as our Meeting DVD Lending Program Coordinator. Feel free to give Byron your ideas about increasing our SAH membership.

Member and Guest Meeting Costs

Because there has been some ongoing confusion about the cost of our meetings for members, spouses, and guests, I would like to clarify the charges:

- - Members and their spouses/significant other (Associate Member) pay $30*

- - All others are considered Guests and pay $35*. If the guest joins the SAH at the meeting, they will receive a $5 credit toward their first year of membership, for a total of just $20.

*The December holiday lunch cost may be higher.

Good News About Hangar One

Aren't we fortunate that Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are aviation and space enthusiasts? NASA has selected Planetary Ventures, a Google subsidiary, to take over and preserve the heritage of Moffett Federal Air Field. They have committed to re-skin and protect Hangar One, as well as rehabilitate Hangars 2 and 3, upgrade the existing golf course, and operate the airfield. The proposal described using all three historic hangars for "research, testing, assembly, and development" of new technologies related to space, aviation, and rovers/robotics. It also calls for building a new 90,000-square-foot structure that Planetary Ventures would make available for a "public benefit educational/museum/incubator". Bravo to all of the history preservationists and aviation enthusiasts who came together to prevent demolition of Hangar One so the restoration can take place!

Our April 12 meeting will take place right at the foot of Hangar One in the Moffett Field Museum where we will hear a presentation on Howard Hughes and his aircraft by SAH member Jim Lund. I'll see you there!

- Alice Hendricks
