Presidents Message for May 2009 The mid-point of the year is almost here. That said, I wanted to give a short status report. Let me start by saying I think our group delivers an awesome value for the $25 annual dues. We have a remarkable newsletter, a fantastic website, an excellent educational meeting program, well-managed money in the bank, a membership committee, and through the Ben Donahue Memorial Scholarship we're actively encouraging young people to take an interest in aviation. In addition, the group offers tours, typically at no cost, to various local aviation- and history-related venues. So far this year our educational programs have brought us an interesting and moving tribute to Astronaut Kalpana Chawla and the crew of STS-107 Columbia, a review of Soviet aircraft at Monino and the highly detailed artwork of Nat Quick, plus we had an outstanding tour of the Airship Ventures' operation and the opportunity to fly on the 246-foot long semi-rigid dirigible Eureka. Not a bad star to the year, yet we've still got three educational programs and we're trying to squeeze in another tour before the year is out. We've accomplished a lot in the first six months, and to that end, the board of directors' goal is to increase our membership. To do this we've taken a three-pronged approach: we're publishing our meeting write-ups in aviation-related magazines, distributing literature at various aviation venues, and we're asking you, our members, to refer a friend. We're offering a free one-year membership to anyone who signs up five new members. This sounds like a lot, but we've already had half a dozen or more members earn this award. Share the enjoyment you get from being an SAH member by bringing a friend to a meeting, passing your newsletter to an aviation-minded coworker, or having us send a complimentary newsletter to someone you know who might be interested - we're happy to do it. Each new member helps our organization grow. - Nick Veronico
