Society for Aviation History

   Presidents Message for Sept. 2008

Although it is still hot outside, the summer season for the Society for Aviation History has come to a close. Membership participation in the society is as high as it has ever been.

In June we were treated to Scott Thompson (SAH 60) and his presentation on the history of Paul Mantz, Frank Tallman, Tallmantz, and the company's involvement in the movie and warbird industries. If you missed the talk, Scott has posted a lot of the material on his excellent website: Aero Vintage - visit the Tallmantz pages

I hope you enjoyed our second annual expanded summer edition of Touch & Go. This 48-page newsletter takes a lot of time, and a lot of things have to come together to get it out on time. Thanks to Betty Veronico (SAH 6) for organizing the authors and content, designing the pages, and getting the magazine to the printer and into the mail. There were excellent contributions from Roger Cain (SAH 2), Alice Hendricks (SAH 73), Norm Jukes (SAH 3), William T. Larkins (SAH 11), Larry Rinek (SAH 79), Paul Schwaffel (SAH 34), Dean Stoker (SAH 26), Rick Turner (SAH 8), and myself. Thank you all for your contributions, and the society looks forward to next year's installment. If you'd like to contribute, please contact Betty Veronico at a meeting or on the chapter phone (650) 631-4207.

Continuing on the theme of membership involvement, our October speaker was recommended by Amjad Noorani (SAH 184) and Don McDonald (SAH 61), the meeting location was suggested by Al Ludlow (SAH 97), and lunch will be catered by Jeremy Sowers (SAH 161) of Emergency BBQ. Now that's what I call teamwork.

Another opportunity to help with the chapter is to run for a position on our board of directors. Board positions do not take a lot of time, the society management meetings are short, and can be a lot of fun. If you're interested, please speak to a board member at the October meeting. Watch your mail in late October for a ballot.

We will close out the year with our holiday meeting at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City, and our guest speakers will be Peter W. Merlin and Tony Moore, also known as the X-Hunters. You've seen them profiled in Air & Space Magazine, and they're new book will be out in November, titled X-Plane Crashes: Exploring Experimental, Rocket Plane, and Spycraft Incidents, Accidents, and Crash Sites. This will be a truly fascinating meeting, and I hope you'll join us. More details will be coming in the next newsletter.

I look forward to seeing you at our October meeting.

- Nick Veronico
