Tour of the United States Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco
SFO Airport - Nov. 12, 2016

The Society for Aviation History was very fortunate to have a behind-the-scenes tour of United States Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station San Francisco (ASSF) on a pleasant day last fall. Air Station San Francisco is an important USCG facility that provides maritime safety, security, and stewardship in California.

Petty Officers Steven O'Neil and Melody Benitez provided an overview of ASSF's facility, staff, aircraft, and missions, along with a tour of the main hangar, and Operations Center.

Our Warbird Restoration Tour
Salinas - April 16, 2016

Members and guests of The Society for Aviation History were given an excellent tour on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Airmotive Specialties, Inc. in Salinas. Owners Dave and Mari Teeters took time out from their busy day, to give us a tour of their warbird and aircraft restoration facility. We had the opportunity to see work being done on three P-51D Mustangs, along with a Yak-11, and a Beech AT-11. There were several other aircraft and helicopters also receiving maintenance work. Following an excellent lunch over at the airport restaurant, The Landing Zone, Teeters invited us to return to the shop, to watch Michael Malcolm depart in his freshly annualed Mustang; it is painted to honor Capt. Charles E. "Chuck" Weaver as Weaver's Nude. This P-51D was previously owned by Lefty Gardner and used to race at the National Reno Air Races and wore the paint scheme Thunderbird # 25.

SAH Tour of Mare Island, Vallejo - March 19, 2016

The Mare Island Historic Park Foundation (MIHPF) hosted a tour for SAH members and guests at the former naval shipyard in Vallejo, Calif., on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Coordinated by MIHPF member Joyce Giles, the tour began with a warm welcome and a brief history of the shipyard by President/Executive Director Ken Zadwick. Led by docents George Higgins and Raymond Boucher, the fascinating tour included visits to Alden Park, the Admiral's Mansion, Officer's Row, and St. Peter's Chapel. Following a lunch break, tour members explored the museum, dry-dock area, and the WWII era USS LCS-102.
