President's Message for Nov./Dec. 2016
The Moffett Field Museum has acquired a Wright J65 axial-flow turbojet, a license-built copy of the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire. However, the engine does not come with a display stand, and they're in need of one. The J65 was used in early jets like the A-4 Skyhawk, F-11 Tiger, F-84F Thunderstreak, and the B-57 Canberra. It's amazing how generous our members can be. When the Stockton Field Museum needed an engine for its flying Lockheed PV-2D Harpoon, one of our members donated one! Let's see if we can now help the Moffett Field Museum, a group that has always been very kind to us. Does anyone have, or know of any, Wright J65 engine stands tucked away in a garage, hangar, or barn? Please contact me through the society if we can pass something along to the museum on your behalf.
Member Dave Osgood, our tour coordinator, has arranged an opportunity for members to tour the historic Coast Guard station at SFO, on Saturday, Nov. 12. Reservations are required and space is limited. Early notification for our tours is handled through our email notification system, managed by Byron May and Ron Close. We don't share your information, we only use your email address to tell you about society events. Please drop us an email or let us know your email address when you check in at the next meeting. Thanks to Dave Osgood, Byron May, and Ron Close for organizing and maintaining these services for our members.
We also now have a new digital projector for our meeting. It is a "short-throw" model and you'll see it sitting within a few feet of the screen - wondering if it will work that close. It does work and we wanted to thank Byron May for researching the best projector for the society. This was not a short, simple task and became known as "The Great Projector Thrash" as he evaluated one projector then another, bought one projector, then another, then another. We used Byron's recommended projector at the October meeting and it is fantastic. Thanks, Byron, for your dedication to finding the right fit for us.
The October meeting's canned food drive drew 175 pounds of staple goods and a number of checks made directly to the Second Harvest Food Bank. In an era when every contribution counts, we really appreciate your donations. When we all pool together, the amount of food and funds really adds up. Thank you!
At the December meeting, we'll host our Toys for Teens drive. Teens are often overlooked in the holidays, and the society has taken those needed teens "under our wing" during the past 10 years. We hope you'll contribute by bringing an unwrapped toy for a teenager and we'll make sure they are distributed to those in need.
With the holidays upon us, membership dues will be due in January. Also, SAH membership makes a great gift, so please introduce a friend or family member to our group by making them a member.
See you in December - Nick Veronico
