President's Message for January/February 2015
For 2015 we've had a couple of changes to the society's board of directors. President Alice Hendricks termed out after four years of dedicated service. She is reaching a major milestone in her life and plans to retire later this year, so transitioning out of the office of president fits in perfectly with Alice's path going forward. Thank you, Alice, for your service. We have benefited greatly from your guidance.
Alice joins the ranks of our past presidents, including Norm Jukes who served eight years on the board of directors, four of which as the society's first president. We'll plan to call on Norm for his wisdom in the coming years.
Members Ron Close and Ron Strong have joined the society's board of directors replacing Alice Hendricks and Norm Jukes. Both are veteran aviation photographers and aviation enthusiasts of the highest order. Welcome Ron and Ron. We look forward to your input to the society's management.
Into the Twilight Zone
Seven members (that we know of) mailed us checks for the last meeting and for dues renewal. For some reason those envelopes did not arrive at our Post Office box, nor were they returned. We're looking into this issue with our post office, and if you've sent us a check that did not get cashed, can you please send us another or use PayPal to complete your transaction?
Upcoming 2015 Presentations
Our group is fortunate in that we've had many outstanding speakers over the years. People who've made history, technical experts who've broken a complex subject down to a relatable level, and some that have been just plain fun and entertaining. For 2015 we've lined-up an impressive slate of speakers:
February 7 Meeting - Pleasant Hill - Bill Yenne - Black Jets: A History of the Aircraft Developed at Groom Lake, America's Secret Aviation Base
April 11 Meeting - Mountain View - Barbara Schultz - Flying Carpets, Flying Wings: The Biography of Moye Stephens
June 6 Meeting - Redwood City - Richard Foss - Food in the Air and Space: The Surprising History of Food and Drink in the Skies
October 3 Meeting - location TBD - Dan Whitney - The Allison Engine
We're working on an interesting speaker for our Annual Meeting in December as well. Please make plans to attend these great aviation history presentations and remember to introduce a friend to the SAH by bringing them along. If they join at a meeting, part of the cost of the lunch is credited to their annual dues. Does it get any better?
We also have a few signed copies of Craig Harwood's book Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West for sale. Copies of this excellent hard cover book are $20 each and sales benefit the society. Please let me know if you'd like to add a copy to your library.
Generosity of our members
The next time you see Andy Melomet at a meeting, be sure to thank him for his efforts to build our SAH meeting video library. Working with other teammates, Andy would take the videos of the meeting and convert them to DVD, then produce multiple copies - at his own expense. If you've ever missed a speaker and have borrowed a dvd, you know what a great asset they are and a what a great membership benefit they are as well. Thank you, Andy. We do appreciate it.
It is worth mentioning again and to thank everyone for their generosity at the October and December meetings. What started out as something nice to do has become something we all take pride in. For the past nine years we've collected canned food at the October meeting and toys for teens in December.
At the October 2014 meeting we collected more than 250 pounds of canned goods as well as a number of checks for the Second Harvest Food Bank. (Update: There were additional canned food donations in December that put us above 300 pounds and we received more checks made payable to the Second Harvest Food Bank, which were forwarded on. Thank you!)
For the December meeting we collect toys for teens because this age group is typically forgotten. There is a photo on page 5 of this newsletter showing the tremendous bounty of gifts collected at the December meeting. This haul was donated in two parts, half to the Toys for Tots program in San Francisco County and the other half to San Mateo/Santa Clara County program.
We are all fortunate to be able to support these worthy causes and when the members of the Society for Aviation History pool their resources it has an impact. Everyone on the board of directors extends its thanks to each of you for your generosity. Thank you.
In closing, it is an honor to be asked to serve as president and I'm looking forward to an outstanding year. Best wishes for a prosperous and healthy new year.
