California Capitol Air Show 2006
Held on the weekend of March 18-19, 2006, this was a suprise air show for Northern California, held at Mather Airport in Sacramento. Considering all the rain we were getting at this time, this was expected to be a big loser. Instead we received unbelievably perfect weather, just long enough for the show to operate, followed by rain that following Monday. The gate saw 70,000 spectators on Saturday, followed by 100,000 on Sunday. This was way beyond what the promoters expected, but a great turnout.
Food lines were long, and during my Sunday visit, by late afternoon, some vendors were/had run out of food and drinks. For a first time show at this location, it was considered a huge success. I went to this show with new member Rick Pisio (SAH 146) and his son, and the one issue we had problems with, was that the sun was directly in front of us dring the show (southerly), thus our aerial photographs were backlit and required some adjusting to get halfway decent pictures. This was also my first show with my new digital camera, so most of my pictures were what I consider experimental. These posted are all digital, although I also used 35mm film as back up. What I found interesting was that for a civilian-organized air show, the large amount of military aircraft that were on static display. Not shown in these pictures were other fighters, helicopters, and some heavies such as the C-17 Globemaster III from March AFB, or the C-5B Galaxy and KC-10 Extender from Travis AFB. I crossed paths with half a dozen members from our SAH goup, and heard from others later that had also attended. Traffic was rough coming in and out, so Rick and I arrived early, and departed late. Rick also has his pictures from this show posted at: The Flight Line.
